Lost River Cave Preparing to Return to Normal Activities

Lost River Cave

Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear said the state will mirror CDC guidelines on COVID-19 announced this week, that people who are fully vaccinated do not need a mask or social distancing in most places.

Beshear said that on June 11 the state will return to 100% capacity for businesses, and no masks will be required for those who have had their shots.

One popular tourism destination in Bowling Green is preparing to get back to normal.

Lost River Cave has had a silver lining during the pandemic. People flocked to the walking trails as outdoor spaces became a welcome , and safe, change from isolation and indoor restrictions.

Lost River Cave spokesperson Katie Cielinski said it’s been a long journey through the pandemic that required closing, followed by capacity restrictions for boat tours, the gift shop, and the community events room.

“We’re thrilled to be on the trail towards normalcy," said Cielinski. "We will take it step at a time, per the state’s guidelines, and will continue to wear masks, and require masks, in closed spaces, so the gift shop, the boat tour, to provide that additional window for people to get vaccinated.”

The boats tours inside the cave have currently been restricted to 17 people per boat and will soon return to the usual 20-person limit.

The River Birch Room for community events will be able to be at 100 percent capacity for Lost River Cave educational events, as well as corporate meetings and private events like baby showers and birthday parties. Cielinski said that also includes events with partner organizations like Wild Ones, with programs on native plants; Water Wheel Rounds, featuringsongwriters from around the region; and the Sierra Club.
