Supporters of a new Hospice Home in Glasgow are one step closer to getting the project finalized.
A $2 million USDA Rural Economic Development Loan has been secured on behalf of the T.J. Community Mission Foundation, which is planning to break ground on the new facility this fall.
Farmers RECC secured the loan for the foundation.
T.J. Regional Health CEO Neil Thornbury said the foundation decided in 2015 to address the shortage of residential hospice homes for patients needing end-of-life care in the Glasgow region.
“This will provide them an option to have a resource available that has specialized nursing, specialized emotional care, access to family and friends,” Thornbury said.
The loan is the last major funding piece needed to build the $3 million facility.
“We’re just now under $2 million in committed pledges, and probably just a little short of $1 million in total donations so far. So, what this $2 million loan does, that’s interest-free over ten years—it allows us to close the gap, because it gives us $2 million, plus the $1 million we have,” Thornbury added.
The name of the new facility will be the Shanti Niketan Hospice Home. The name roughly translates to “a peaceful place” in the native language of Dr. Bharat Mody of Glasgow, who has been a lead philanthropic supporter of the project.
The foundation hopes the new Hospice Home will open within ten to 12 months. The building will be able to hold up to eight patients at a time.
