Ryan Van Velzer

Henderson County is one of two Kentucky locations chosen to partner with the federal government in a pilot project to make COVID-19 vaccinations more accessible to underserved communities. The site will open on Thursday, April. 29.

The pilot project with FEMA will open a Community Vaccination Center in the Expo Center at the Henderson County Cooperative Extension Service on Kentucky 351, also known as Zion Road.

Extension Service spokesperson Amanda Hardy said federal, state and local agencies are collaborating to create the new vaccination site.

“We were approached by the Kentucky Emergency Management, along with Henderson Emergency Management, FEMA, National Guard and Kentucky Public Health,”  said Hardy.

A second Community Vaccination Center in Kentucky is opening Wednesday, April 28, at the Laurel County Cooperative Extension site.

Both sites are expected to remain open for at least six weeks in the federal government's partnership with the state to bring the vaccine to underserved communities.

The website to register for vaccines at those centers is scheduled to go live on April 26.

Information on registration also available from the Kentucky COVID-19 Vaccine Appintment Scheduling Center at 270-953-3785.
