After years of delays, the deadline to have a Real ID for flying in the U.S. is prepared for takeoff. Some states are scrambling to make sure everyone has a compliant ID before the May 7 deadline, but Kentucky lawmakers want another extension.

The Kentucky Department of Transportation is adding staff and resources to handle an influx of driver’s license requests this spring. May 7 is the national Real ID enforcement deadline.

Kentucky is below the national average for obtaining a REAL ID ahead of a federal deadline that’s now one year away. Only 28 percent of state's population has obtained a REAL ID which is a more secure driver's license or identification card that will be required by May 7, 2025 to board domestic flights, visit military bases, and enter certain federal buildings.
