A motorcycle ride this week in Hardin County is putting the spotlight on sexual assault awareness and prevention.
The U.S. Army Human Resources Command at Fort Knox is holding its annual Raise the Bars Motorcycle Ride Thursday.
Participants will start at Fort Knox and ride to Silverleaf Sexual Trauma Recovery Services in Elizabethtown.
James Frye, a victims’ advocate for the Army Human Resources Command, said recent high-profile cases across the nation have led to increased awareness about the need to identity workplace harassment and assault.
“We believe if you see something, say something. Nobody should just be a bystander because if you think you’re not going to be in the story, you already are. And I myself would rather be a person in the story who tried to do something to help someone who was in trouble, rather than just standing by and watching.”
Frye said his group is working to make all parts of the Army an environment where problems will be reported.
“We can speak and know we’ll be heard. We can speak up and know that we’ll be assisted—that I can go to my different leaders at any level and know that they’re going to hear me. And that’s a very, very big improvement from years past when that may not have taken place.”
Thursday’s motorcycle ride is open to Fort Knox soldiers, family members, civilian staff, and the public. Members of the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association and the American Legion Riders Post 113 will also participate
April is Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.
