Kentucky Funeral Homes Expanding Services Following COVID-19 Restrictions

Kentucky funeral homes and memorial services can increase capacity Wednesday, after limiting services to 10 people or less due to the coronavirus pandemic. Those facilities will now be allowed to operate at 33% of the building’s occupancy.

Kevin Kirby is the owner of JC Kirby and Son Funeral Chapel in Bowling Green, and the Warren County Coroner.

He said he’s offering families the option to have a memorial service later when more people would be able to attend.

“And there are several families that opted for that. Then there are a lot of families that said ‘no, we don’t want to do that because we don’t want to go through it a second time,'” he said.

Kirby has been in the business for 56 years and said it’s been hard not to be close to people or comfort them with hugs during those difficult moments.

“For instance, there’s a lady the other day and she wanted to give me a hug, and I’m diabetic. I said, ‘no, I can’t give you a hug right now, I’m over that 60 mark and I’m diabetic.’ You could tell she was aggravated at me. And I said ‘but I tell you what I’ll do. When this gets over with I’ll give you three for the one,’” he said.

Kirby said his funeral homes are increasing signage about social distancing, offering more sanitizing stations, and limiting areas where people would normally congregate.
