After a tumultuous year disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, Kentucky school districts are preparing for a more traditional in-person setting as the new academic year approaches.

One district in western Kentucky that has 70 open slots is hoping a Saturday job fair will help fill some of those positions.

Daviess County Schools Human Resources Manager Courtney Payne said the number of open positions is not unusual because this is always a busy time of year for hiring.

“There may be a few more positions than a typical year, nothing drastic. But we’re seeing a significantly lower number of applicants.," said Payne. "So that has been the biggest struggle that we have faced with Daviess County Public Schools, is the number of applications coming in.”

Payne said the open positions are across the board.

“We are struggling on the support side with filling positions such as our lunchroom workers, our custodians, our bus monitors and drivers," said Payne."We still need a few instructional assistants throughout the district as well. It’s a really wide variety and right now we even have two openings for vehicle mechanics, which we haven’t seen in a while.”

Payne said the district will participate in a regional “Close the Gap” job fairon Saturday to let job seekers know the variety of positions available.

Some of the other employers participating in the event include Owensboro Public Schools, Owensboro Community and Technical College and the city police department.

The job fair is from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Kentucky Career Center in Owensboro.
