Western Kentucky University Economist Stresses Importance of Global Markets at Event in Owensboro

Becca Schimmel | Ohio Valley ReSource

A Western Kentucky University economist said global trade issues increasingly have an impact on farmers and business in places like southern Kentucky.

Brian Strow, a professor of Economics and the BB&T Professor for the Study of Capitalism at Western Kentucky University, said farmers are especially reliant on a healthy global economy, and have been closely following news concerning U.S. trade policy with China and the European Union.

“We grow way more corn, soybeans than we’ll ever consume in the United States. So having access to global markets is very important for the pocketbooks of farmers.”

Strow is speaking Monday night in Owensboro about the global economy. He said he hopes those attending his lecture leave with an understanding of how trade, demographic changes and the national debt factor into national elections.

“So hopefully I would want people to come away from the talk thinking hey, how can I vote in upcoming primaries this next year? or presidential or congressional elections, how can I get involved and make sure leaders understand that these issues do matter.”

Strow said he wants to convince audience members that trade and immigration are good for the global economy.

His lecture on issues facing the global economy is Monday, Sept. 16, at 7 p.m. at Owensboro’s Community and Technical College.
