Emergency Food Distributions Continue to Help Kentuckians Get Through the Pandemic

The pandemic has caused thousands of people across Kentucky, and the nation, to lose their jobs and struggle to keep food on the table.

Emergency food distributions, including two this week, are helping hundreds of Warren County families who are hungry.

Feeding Kentucky has already been bringing food once a month to Lampkin Park in Warren County. But since the pandemic, the food bank has added emergency distributions once a month at two additional parks.

Jamie Sizemore, executive director of the food bank that serves 42 counties, said many people may not realize how many families don’t have enough to eat.

“We’ve never in the history of this food bank, or any food bank within the Feeding America network, have we ever seen the magnitude of food insecurity due to so many issues," said Sizemore. "It’s just overwhelming.”

The food bank distributed more than one million pounds of food in Warren County from March through November. That’s equal to more than 887,000 meals.

In addition, other local food pantries and partner organizations also regularly distribute food in the county.

Sizemore said pandemic safety precautions are in place for people picking up food at the distibution sites.

“These are all what we call drive through distributions, no contact distributions. We do trunk loading. We do registration, verbal registration. We don’t pass pens," said Sizemore. "We’re doing that to protect obviously our volunteers and also the clients, some of them who are seniors or may have underlying conditions.”

Feeding Kentucky brings food to about 2,500 household each month at the three Warren County sites.

The food bank is partnering with the United Way of Southern Kentucky and Warren County Parks and Recreation Department for the distributions.
