Bowling Green Business Recommended Masks for Customers Before State-Wide Mandate

submitted by Justin Shepherd

Some local businesses in Kentucky are finding the statewide face-covering mandate easy to enforce because they already had a similar policy in place. Spencer’s Coffee in Bowling Green, Ky., has been requesting customers wear face-masks since the early days of the pandemic.

Governor Andy Beshear issued an executive order last week requiring Kentuckians to wear face masks in situations where they can’t keep six feet of social distance from other people.

Justin Shepherd, owner of Spencer’s Coffee, said the Beshear’s mandate makes the coffeshop's policy on face masks easier to enforce.

“Business owners are in a weird position when they have to ask people to do something they’re not used to doing,” Shepherd said. “With the state-wide mandate, it’s a little easier to say to someone, we really need you to wear a mask to be inside.”

Shepherd said most people haven’t had a problem complying with the coffee shop’s policy. He said Spencer’s has not reopened to dine-in services and won’t until it’s safe for employees and customers.

Kentucky has been seeing a slow increase in coronavirus cases over the past several weeks.
