Myanmar democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi says she supports the lifting of remaining U.S. sanctions against her Asian country because the time has come for her countrymen to take full responsibility to root out any remaining human rights abuses.
The 67-year-old Nobel laureate said Monday that sanctions were crucial in helping put her country, also known as Burma, on a path toward democracy. But she told an audience at the University of Louisville that relying on sanctions would be an "abrogation of responsibility" for her countrymen to take the lead in making progress.
Her country is emerging from decades of authoritarian rule and diplomatic isolation. Earlier this year, President Barack Obama eased an investment ban on Myanmar, and named the first U.S. ambassador to the country in 22 years.
