Lasley: Get Ready for a Nasty Campaign this Fall

A WKU political analyst says voters should brace themselves for a rough general election battle this fall. Political Science Professor Scott Lasley says with Rick Santorum out of the Republican primary, Mitt Romney and President Obama can focus on something they had already started to do—blaming the other person’s ideology for the current condition of the economy.

“I think what you’re going to see is both candidates really run against each other. I think you’re going to see Obama run against Romney, and Romney’s strategy is clearly going to be to run against Obama. So you’re going to have a fairly negative campaign from that perspective,” said Lasley.

Lasley says Romney has become a better campaigner because of the competitive GOP primary. At the same time, he believes the former Massachusetts Governor has made several verbal gaffes that the Obama campaign will use against him.
