The U.S. Forest Service has dropped a proposal for commercial logging in a section of the Daniel Boone National Forest over concerns about the potential impact on a pristine spring and trees hundreds of years old.
Forest Service District Ranger Jason Nedlo said the agency received a significant amount of negative feedback about the plans to allow logging in Rockcastle County over a project called the Crooked Creek Vegetation Management in the Climax and Little Egypt areas.
Kentucky Heartwood forest ecologist Jim Scheff told the Lexington Herald-Leader the proposal called for cutting nearly all the trees in some spots.
Scheff said he has documented trees more than 250 years old in the Little Egypt area.
