Strong thunderstorms and tornadoes are moving through parts of the South
Weather forecasters are warning of the potential for strong thunderstorms and tornadoes across a wide swath of the South Wednesday, including across Mississippi, Georgia and the Florida Panhandle.
Tornado Warnings May Have Had Desired Effect
Over 100 tornadoes touched down Saturday in the Great Plains, causing millions of dollars in damage across Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska and Iowa. Despite the wreckage, there were few fatalities, a result perhaps due in part to the National Weather Service's warnings. Russell Schneider of the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Okla., offers his insight.

After Deadly Tornadoes, Back To School In Piner, Ky.

The town of Piner, which is in Banta's school district, was one of the hardest hit by recent tornadoes: at least four people were killed. CDC Says Helmets Are No Match For Tornadoes, But They Might Not Hurt
Last year, tornadoes claimed the lives of more than 500 people in the U.S. Some safety advocates say protecting your head with a sturdy helmet could help reduce injuries and deaths. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says it's unaware of evidence in favor of helmets, but it acknowledges people may want to use them to protect themselves against head injuries.
