Mammoth Cave National Park says efforts are underway this month to clean and document historic stone retaining walls at the Green River Ferry area of the park. Acting Superintendent Bruce Powell says rehabilitation plans for the ferry landings call for the rock walls to be removed before reconstruction starts and then rebuilt.
Powell says the walls will be documented so they can be replaced as they were before the work began.
The walls were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the late 1930s after the ferry crossing was moved downstream. The four walls hold the river bank in place.
Funding has not been secured yet for the entire ferry landing project. Powell says documenting the walls now will allow the park to move forward once funding is available.
