U.S. Attorney Opens First Staffed Bowling Green Office

Lisa Autry

The U.S. Department of Justice is opening an office in Bowling Green that will house full-time federal prosecutors.

Until now, local law enforcement had to make the two-hour commute to the U.S. Attorney's Office in Louisville when working on federal cases.

Russell Coleman, U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Kentucky, said having federal prosecutors working out of Bowling Green will expedite the resolution of cases.

"We are seeing narcotics at a volume we have not seen in this commonwealth’s history or this country’s history...methamphetamine, synthetic opioids, fentanyl, coming over the border from Mexico," Coleman said during a news conference in Bowling Green. "The challenges are growing, the threat is growing. So what do we do in law enforcement? We adapt, we grow.”

Mark Yurchisin was sworn in on Wednesday as a Special Assistant U.S. Attorney.  He previously served as Assistant Warren County Attorney. Yurchisin and Assistant U.S. Attorney Madison Sewell will staff the Bowling Green office located at the federal courthouse.

A third prosecutor will be added later this year.
