The Trump administration is reversing its decision to close two job corps centers in Kentucky, which provide services to at-risk youth in rural areas.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky is praising the Trump administration for keeping open Job Corps Civilian Conservation Centers in McCreary and Menifee counties. The centers provide education and job training to disadvantaged youth.
McConnell said in a statement that the centers provide critical services in some of the commonwealth’s most distressed communities. According to its website, the Pine Knot program helps students obtain a high school diploma or GED and offers technical training, English language learning, and residential housing.
The Trump administration announced plans last month to end nine Job Corps programs nationwide and place others under management by contractors. The plan could have also impacted employees and operations at the Great Onyx CCC in Edmonson County. The programs operate under the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
