The President of the Kentucky Senate says he’ll never again negotiate with Democrats in private. Cumberland County Republican David Williams says House Democrats reneged on a previous agreement regarding transportation projects in his district.
The special legislative session that wrapped up Friday included a final deal on Kentucky’s next transportation budget. But David Williams says he’ll never again have closed meetings or any kind of private negotiations with the House because—quote—“they do not live up to the commitments that they make.”
The Courier-Journal quotes Williams as saying Democrats used brinkmanship and pushed important issues to the final days of the session in order to force Republicans to accept legislation they otherwise would reject.
Williams says Democrats reneged on a deal to override Governor Beshear’s line-item budge vetoes, including $ 50 million in transportation projects in the Senate leader’s district.
House Speaker Greg Stumbo rejects the accusations, saying such a deal was never in place.
