Kentucky's top transportation official has told the National Transportation Safety Board that navigation lights on bridges are working properly and that workers who inspect and maintain the lights are properly trained.
The 312 foot Delta Mariner struck the traffic deck of the Eggners Ferry Bridge last night, causing the collapse of a two hundred foot section of the structure. Emergency officials say none of the twenty crew members on board were injured and there is no indication any vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the incident.
The Eggners Ferry Bridge spans a little more than a half mile over Kentucky Lake. It is at the western entrance to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.
