The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet is moving concrete barrier walls and replacing them with orange barrels and signs, as they prepare for the re-opening of the Sherman Minton bridge. The structure was closed in September after a significant crack was discovered in a load-carrying steel beam on the bridge, which carries Interstate 64 traffic between Louisville and New Albany, Indiana.
The 312 foot Delta Mariner struck the traffic deck of the Eggners Ferry Bridge last night, causing the collapse of a two hundred foot section of the structure. Emergency officials say none of the twenty crew members on board were injured and there is no indication any vehicles were on the bridge at the time of the incident.
The Eggners Ferry Bridge spans a little more than a half mile over Kentucky Lake. It is at the western entrance to the Land Between the Lakes National Recreation Area.
