Construction is underway to bring the Natcher Parkway in Ohio and Daviess counties up to interstate standards.
The work zone runs north from the Ohio-Butler County line to the U.S. 60 Interchange in Daviess County. Keith Todd, a spokesman for the state Transportation Cabinet, says the work will include the removal of concrete where toll booths were once located under the Kentucky 69 overpass.
"When we took out those tollbooths several years ago, it left some rough concrete that has deteriorated over the years, so they're going to jack hammer that out and replace that pavement," Todd explained.The work will also include drainage work and guardrail updates. Motorists are urged to be mindful of lane restrictions and lower speed limits.
The $28 million project should be finished by next June and is a small step toward converting the Natcher Parkway to an Interstate 65 spur. Work is also occurring on the parkway in Bowling Green. The entire 72-mile stretch between Bowling Green and Owensboro will become I-165 within the next five to ten years.
Converting the Natcher Parkway into an Interstate 65 spur is expected to improve economic development opportunities for the region.
