Motorists are being warned to be prepared for a major resurfacing project that begins Tuesday night along a stretch of Interstate 65 in southern Kentucky.
All six lanes of the interstate are being repaved between mile markers 35 and 44, which covers the Oakland area to the Cumberland Parkway exit.
Wes Watt, a spokesman for the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet office in Bowling Green, says the resurfacing work will be done in the late evening and early morning hours, between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m.
“We are going to have law enforcement on site for the total duration of the project to help with safety. So we need folks to just be aware this is going on, we need folks to slow down, and we need folks to pay attention. Because at high speeds the queue can back up for several miles even if it gets real bad.”
The interstate will be reduced to one lane during the hours when work is being done.
Watt adds the work being done should impact the roadway for years to come.
“Generally, 15, 16, 18 years. This section, I believe, was repaved about 15 or so years ago. The section a little bit further south that we did last year, I think we got 16 years out of it.”
Watt says contractors hope to have the resurfacing done by the end of November.
