Here's How a Grant Will Impact WKU Group Helping First-Generation Students

WKU

The Intercultural Student Engagement Center Academy is accepting a $20,000 grant which will help aid the 2018 cohort of students.

ISEC Academy is a Western Kentucky University initiative that supports students who are first generation, underrepresented and Pell grant recipients.

The program provides participants with upperclassmen mentors, a living learning community and weekly study hours to help guide students to a four-year graduation.

WKU freshman Nyla Rogers says the organization provides her a community as she becomes familiar with campus.

“ISEC gave me a type of home a community that i can be involved with that I can talk to. I have adults that I can go to with anything.”

ISEC Executive Director Martha Sales works with students daily to ensure they are aware of the resources WKU has to offer and ensure success in and out of the classroom.

“I often share with my staff when we have those days that are really hard. What would the students do if we weren’t here?”

Sales urges members of the community to consider donating their time, talent or resources to help support the program. Enrollment to be an ISEC scholar is now open for incoming freshman.
