Former Bardstown Mayor John Royalty will likely avoid jail time after being criminally charged with abusing his power and violating privacy laws while in office.

WDRB reportsRoyalty made an agreement with prosecutors that includes delaying the case for five years.

The agreement also allows Royalty to have the case expunged from his record.

The former mayor was charged with perjury after investigators said he lied under oath during a hearing aimed at removing him from office.

He is also charged with official misconduct for ordering a city employee to access the private emails of a councilwoman Kecia Copeland.

An investigation found that Royalty had orchestrated a scheme to distribute damaging information about Copeland.

Royalty also filed two separate lawsuits, one against the city and one against individual council members.

Royalty is dropping those lawsuits as part of the deferment agreement.
