A well-known Army commander is coming back to Fort Campbell after taking a prestigious fellowship at Harvard University. Col. Andrew Poppas is taking over as the new deputy commander for operations under Maj. Gen. James C. McConville, the commanding general of the 101st Airborne Division.

A ceremony will be held on Thursday at the division's headquarters on the Tennessee-Kentucky state line.

Poppas previously served as the commander of the 1st Brigade Combat Team during the division's last deployment to Afghanistan in 2010-2011. He led Task Force Bastogne in the eastern provinces of Afghanistan along the Pakistan border.

After returning from the deployment, he was selected to be a 2011 National Security Fellow at the Harvard's John F. Kennedy School of Government.
