Dan Modlin

Dan Modlin served as News Director at WKU Public Radio for 23 years, and retired in early 2013. He's a native of Indiana who grew up in a broadcasting family.  A graduate of Ball State University, he worked for several years in the news network business in the Midwest, specializing in agricultural and political coverage, before coming to WKU Public Radio. His reports have earned numerous national  and state  awards for documentary production, public affairs reporting, and enterprise reporting. Dan continues to co-host Barren River Breakdown.

Eggners Ferry Bridge Expected to Reopen by Memorial Day Weekend

Workers on the job at Eggners Ferry Bridge

Officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet say repairs on the Eggners Ferry Bridge are progressing nicely, and reinforcing steel has been placed on the structure today. At this point, they believe the structure will be ready for use during the Memorial Day weekend.

School Volunteers to Pay for Criminal Background Checks

Volunteers at Kentucky schools will probably be forced to pay a ten dollar fee for criminal background checks, if they want to help out in the upcoming school year. The new fee will go into effect on July 1st.

New Record Established for Degrees Conferred in Kentucky

Universities and colleges in the Commonwealth conferred a total of 63,000 degrees this academic year, setting a new record. Council on Postsecondary Education President Bob King says the numbers indicate that "significant progress" is being made in meeting educational attainment goals established in the bluegrass state.

Historians Mark the 150th Anniversary of Shenandoah Fighting

150 years ago this month, Union and Confederate forces met in some bloody fighting in Virginia's Shenandoah Valley.  Stonewall Jackson distinguished himself in the field, in fighting that demonstrated the importance of good maps and accurate military intelligence.

Kentucky Joins Settlement against Shoe Company

Kentucky is one of 44 states reaching a 45 million dollar settlement with Skechers USA, Inc.  The settlement stems from complaints about deceptive advertising for rocker-bottom shoes.
